The Journey of Guanghai People in Canada: A Century of Struggles and Triumphs
More than 130 years ago, the people of Guanghai, carrying hopes for a better future, crossed the vast ocean and set foot on Canadian soil, embarking on their journey to make a living. This history is not just a tale of personal struggles but also a testament to cross-border cultural and social exchanges between the East and the West.
Today, Guanghai descendants in Toronto have flourished, spanning six generations and numbering in the tens of thousands. They have not only established deep roots in Canadian society but have also made indelible contributions to the country’s economic, cultural, and social development. At the same time, they have remained deeply connected to their cultural heritage, serving as bearers of Chinese traditions, bridges of friendship between China and Canada, and vital links in maintaining ties with their homeland.
Hardships and Perseverance: The Early Days
Historical records reveal that over a century ago, Guanghai immigrants in Canada endured the grueling task of constructing the Pacific Railway. As one of the main labor forces of the time, they faced relentless physical labor, harsh working conditions, and were further burdened by the discriminatory head tax. They also suffered from anti-Chinese exclusion laws and racial hostility. Their lives were trapped in the predicament of “Returning home in poverty, life holds no solutions; lying ill in a foreign land, even death is difficult.” They drifted without support and struggled in uncertainty.
Despite facing racial discrimination and oppression, Guanghai people did not yield. Instead, they united and fought bravely for their rights. In August 1916, a group of Guanghai immigrants—including Chen Aoliang (from Gulong4 ShaChao Village), Liu Zicheng, Liu Jueyou (from Dongshan Village), He Yanmei (from Renmei Village), Zhao Shupan (from Beijiang Village), Lin Juming (from Linwudi), and Feng Yanjv (from Shuangmen Village)—came together to establish the Guanghai Association.
With unyielding determination, they tirelessly mobilized their fellow countrymen, raising funds and ultimately securing a meeting place. Their efforts received overwhelming support from the community, marking the creation of an organization that provided a platform for mutual assistance. The establishment of the Guanghai Association not only strengthened solidarity among Guanghai people but also laid a strong foundation for them to fight for dignity and rights in a foreign land.
Growth and Flourishing of the Guanghai Association
Over the past century, the Guanghai Association has grown from nothing into a thriving and resilient organization. It has taken root in Toronto, blossomed, and matured into a towering presence in the community. Today, it is a legally recognized organization with a solid economic foundation, property assets, and a well-structured management system. With over 400 members, the association continues to flourish, reflecting the unity, perseverance, and achievements of the Guanghai people in Canada.
For years, the Guanghai Association has upheld the principle of “unity and mutual support, serving fellow countrymen.” It has actively participated in charitable activities such as disaster relief and poverty alleviation, generously contributing to the well-being of its homeland. Whether supporting educational initiatives in their ancestral villages or helping impoverished families improve their living conditions, the association has consistently fulfilled its social responsibilities through concrete actions.
Looking ahead, we will continue to build upon our legacy, striving for the welfare of our people and contributing to the prosperity of both our homeland and our adopted country. We firmly believe that with the collective efforts of all members, the Guanghai Association will continue to thrive, serving as a bridge between past and future, between home and the world.
